Yang San Lang was one of the fathers of Taiwan's Contemporary Art World. Running away from home to study art in Japan at the age of 15, his life began as it was led, dedicated to bringing artistic excellence to his beloved Taiwanese home. At age 19, he studied in Paris and was the first Taiwanese artist to receive a salon at the Louvre. From painting under the name Sasaboro.yo during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, surviving an assassination attempt, living in exile for a decade after the events of the 228 Incident and the White Terror kill list that followed. All the while, during exile, he organed artists in Taiwan's arts underground through the Tai Yang Art Society which he helped create, and exists to this day. Yang San Lang lived both the lives of an artist fighting for his life during times in which it was dangerous to have a following as a free thinker, and that of an internationally prominent artist well celebrated within his lifetime.
Wrote the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, on Yang San Lang:
"Throughout his life, Yang San-Lang never stop(ped) contributing to the Taiwanese art movement, every stage of his life is a culmination of experiences. Because of Yang, even war could not destroy the vitality of the Taiwanese fine art movement. The seed of Taiwanese art was able to germinate, to grow and eventually came to its blossoming."
Yang San Lang, the artist whose work is celebrated at San Lang Atelier, is my paternal grandfather. I was fortunate to know him as a young child, well into my adulthood. Intending for me to help carry the lessons of courage and hope through his artistic legacy by way of stewardship of his private collection and education of its history and cultural relevance, my grandfather endeavored to instruct me both in the technical craft of maintaining his body of work and curating his collection for public access and consumption, and in how to see and feel an image's way to a medium where it can be shared.
Feeling his love, sharing time with him on the road internationally as he expressed himself through his approach to the work, and eventually curating the art museum which housed his work and shared the simplicity of his art-prioritized lifestyle, has made me the person I am today. It is my privilege to tell his full story and share a perspective on this well-loved artist that one cannot find anywhere else.
- Christopher K. Young
Yang San Lang traveled the world to capture its beauties and insights with his eyes, then render them to canvas. A personally relevant part of his ventures was trading pieces he had rendered with the work of local artists, artisans, and craftspeople. He drew much satisfaction with the idea that his work could be seen in homes everywhere. Consequently, his personal studio was full of the works and crafts of those he traded with, proudly displaying these creative interactions with all who came to visit his process.
Much of his work is exclusively housed in museums, prominent commerical venues, or in the collections of private owners. Access to his increasingly rarified body of work is typically by way of auction or private gallery sale.
San Lang Atelier seeks to democratize the process with which his work can find its way into the hands of his admirers and by doing so, continue to tell his story, share his values, and preserve his legacy in the manner he and the artistically inclined members of his family had hoped.

旭 / Sunrise is one of Master Yang's most enduring works. Popularized by former Taiwan President Lee Tung Hui's stories of watching my grandfather paint the sunrise from the Taiwan East Coast as a child, 旭 / Sunrise encapsulates many of Yang San Lang's signature elements: the sun, the blending of the water, and the warm tones of the morning sky. This particular subject is especially sought after by practitioners of Feng Shui to enhance or balance relevant areas of their home or office.

This impressively sized lithograph is based on a diptych oil painting 324 X 176.5 cm in size, last known to be housed at the Yang San Lang Art Museum. Lake Towada is located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, its 400-meter mountain a popular Yang family retreat, calling to those seeking tranquility. Facing the volcano, the quiet lake water summons visitors from near and far. Master Yang dominates the landscape with warm orange juxtaposed against the icy blue palette of the mountain.

Yang San Lang's grandson, Christopher K. Young on 尼泊爾高山曉日/Fishtail Mountain Scene: "I was always in awe of my grandfather making the several days' journey through Nepal on foot. I was relaying that story to a Nepalese friend as I was giving him a tour of the museum when he stopped me, pointed to this painting, and exclaimed, 'this is my backyard!'
I probed him for more details. 'We call this "Fishtail Mountain," and this view is several days' journey from the nearest airport. Indeed your grandfather did some traveling...'"

My grandparents wished foremost that I return to Taiwan after an upbringing in the United States to continue their service to the greater East Asian Art Community and the people of Taiwan. It is in that spirit that I share their gifts and their incredible story with you, here, at San Lang Atelier. - With Love, Christopher K. Young

From the walls of converted industrial spaces to hand-installed track systems in his grandfather's museum, to free-floating framed photography, Christopher K. Young combines the do-it-yourself know-how and problem solving of his American grandfather with the museological traditions and instruction of his Taiwanese grandfather. Initially a cinematography student, Young changed majors to Art History with emphasis on applied studio art practices in preparation for a lifetime of service to his grandfather's legacy and the art-going Taiwanese public.
